Star Trek: First Contact
Although Star Trek Generations did well at the box office it failed to really blow me away and was less than critically acclaimed. Would its sequel manage to take things in the right direction now that the series’ ties to the original franchise had been severed? Read on and find out as I review Star Trek: First Contact, spoiler free!
The film begins as Captain Jean-Luc Picard is experiencing a nightmare reliving the time he was assimilated by the Borg. Ironically, Jean-Luc is awaken with the news that a Borg cube has attacked a Federation outpost, crossed into Federation space and is headed for Earth. Picard then informs the crew that because of his previous encounter with the Borg the Enterprise has been assigned to guard the Romulan Neutral Zone instead of joining in on the fight. Picard and the crew then (much like previous films in the series) disobey their superiors and set a course for Earth, where they join the fight against the advancing Borg cube.
Using some hidden knowledge Picard has about the Borg he directs the crew to blast at a seemingly unimportant section of the Borg cube causing its final destruction. As the Borg ship explodes it shoots out a round vessel towards Earth. The Enterprise’s sensors detect that the Borg vessel is emitting a temporal vortex as it quickly disappears. Immediately after the vessel’s disappearance the appearance of Earth changes drastically and the crew realizes that it has been taken over by the Borg seemingly from the past. As the temporal vortex begins to fade Captain Picard orders the crew to follow the Borg into the past in an effort to prevent whatever catastrophe the Borg has causes.
It turns out the Borg Vessel traveled to April of 2063, one day before Earth’s first contact with an alien species, an event that would usher in the formation of the United Federation of Planets that keep the Borg at bay. It appears that the Borg were attempting to prevent first contact by stopping the launch of Earth’s first warp-powered spacecraft that catches the attention of the Vulcan race thus causing first contact. The crew manages to stop the Borg Vessel from doing too much damage but still has to help Doctor Cochrane finish his ship so it can make first contact all while fighting off the Borg who have secretly infiltrating the Enterprise!
From beginning to end First Contact brings the action, and the Borg (who are a mix between T-800s from Terminator, Xenomorph’s from Alien and zombies from Night of the Living Dead) are the perfect enemies to keep things rolling. That’s not to say that the film is all killer, no filler because it also brings some excellent performances from the cast, most notably Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard as he struggles to let go of feelings of vengeance, à la Moby Dick. First Contact is also a treat for the eyes and ears that still holds up seventeen years later. Unlike Generations the story is simple and clear (even though time travel scenarios can be tricky) and well… it just works.
